On Sunday 28 August 2011, over 700 runners had a sunrise start to the annual Econet Vic Falls Marathon in Zimbabwe, as well as the Zambezi Lite Half Marathon and Shoprite Fun Run. Great weather, festive supporters, amazing service from the sponsored waterpoints, and the post event cruise and after party on the Zambezi River were the highlights for most runners.
The top places were all won by Zimbabwe Athletes, and it was great to see some Tanzanians & Kenyan's coming all the way down (by bus!!) to compete, and take home some prizes (results on website you can view them here) .
This event, going into its 6th year, has grown from humble beginnings into one of Africas best and most scenic races. Support from sponsors, all of whom are Zimbabwe's top companies, as well as tight organization by the management team and the community make this a real "team effort".
On top of the athletics element, we managed to "spread the happiness", donating 100 wheelchairs to disabled people in the region, thanks to Network of Caring, as well as supplies to local schools, and money and support to our chosen charities, and the Vic Falls Anti Poaching Unit. This charity element is close to all our hearts, and there were very few dry eyes when we were able to give local disabled people a new means of mobility - all the "team", and the sponsors, should be proud of what this event is doing in Zimbabwe.
Attached to the event , the Zambezi Man Multi Event, combining White Water Rafting, an MTB race, AND the Marathon, also went well, proving that the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is now becoming a world class destination for adventure events. We also have a fantastic 3 day MTB event in June 2012, for the MTB fraternity - where else can you MTB amongst elephants!!
The results are up on the web, they can be viewd at this link here, as well as gallery of pictures, and the TV production will be on Supersport soon too. Have a look - and put this race on your calendar for 2012.
Come to the Falls - and remember, ZIM'S BACK !!!
Best regards,
Victoria Falls Marathon Team |
